What is Nanotechnology?
What comes to mind when you see the word “nanotechnology”? Do you think of self replicators or microbots? Do you think of scientists in lab coats using tiny microscopes? Maybe you just think, that’s a big science word…and now I’m confused. (don’t worry, we’ve been there too.)
It might come as a surprise, but we are huge fans of all things small here at #NMHQ and like to consider ourselves experts on the topic!
The Definition of Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is defined as the branch of technology that deals with dimensions and tolerances of less than 100 nanometers, especially the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules.
In other words, nanotechnology is any technology that uses super tiny particles to get the job done. A nanometer is one-billionth, (or 10^-9th) of a meter, which is the equivalent of 1/80,000th of a human hair! Think of it this way: a nanoparticle next to a lady bug would look like a ladybug next to the earth.
Really, really, really small.
Fun Fact: nanotechnology can be found in nature! Geckos basically have “spiderman” feet thanks to microscopic hairs called setae, which are split into smaller nanostructures known as spatulas and give them super gripping power.
How does Nano Magic use nanotechnology?
We like to brag about how our products do an awesome job of harnessing the power of Nanotechnology. But… what does that really mean?
Here’s how nanotechnology enhances our products!
Using Micelle Technology
To understand how we utilize nanotech in our lens cleaners, you have to know about Micelle technology. You might have heard of Micellar water in the beauty industry. We do something similar, but specially designed for your surfaces! To put it simply, micelles are spheres of surfactant molecules that pull oil and dirt particles off of a surface and into their centers.
Why Micelle is Great
By utilizing Micelle technology in our cleaners, we have created a product that actually picks up oil and dirt on contact. This makes it quicker and easier to get a clean, clear surface. All you have to do is spray and wipe away!
What is Fog?
Fog in the air, on your windshield or even on your glasses after a heavy exhale is a results of a process you’re probably already familiar with: condensation. When warm air cools quickly, it begins to turn back into water. This leaves small water droplets suspended in the air or on the cooled surface. When light hits these round balls of water, it is diffracted in all different directions making it visible to the naked eye. This is what gives “foggy” surfaces their cloudy appearance.
How Fog is Stopped
To keep a surface from fogging up, we have to alter it’s properties on a nano scale. We use specialized surfactants to force the water droplets to reorder into a smooth, flat layer. Once the water molecules are lined up straight, light will bounce back off the water uniformly, making it invisible to the naked eye. No more fogginess!

Chemically Bonded Nano Coating
Our coating utilizes a specialized compound to create a hydrophobic Self Assembly Monolayer, or SAM for short. We make this layer super thin (20-30 nanometers to be exact) so that it remains optically clear.
The most important part of the coating process happens during application. As the compound is exposed to the surface, a chemical reaction occurs and creates a chemical bond strong enough to withstand months of exposure to the elements.
What Does Hydrophobic Mean?
Have you ever driven in a rain storm, wipers on full speed, crouched as far forward as possible just to see a foot ahead? It sucks, we know. This happens because water hits the windshield and sticks to it until the wipers drag it away. When there’s a lot of water, and a lot of sticking, it can be impossible to see through.
A hydrophobic layer on a surface will actually “reject” the water, causing it to bead up on contact rather than spreading like normal. You’ll be amazed as it rolls off faster than the wipers can get to it. In fact, you might not even need the wipers at all!
